first of all, I want to send best wishes to Costco and its founders. Just because they have a wholesome business model.

The second thing is: do we still trust LV as any sort of status signal? I'd rather see the Costco wheels rolling through the lounge, than the bag that we know will melt if left out in the sun.

they'll come after me with squeaky bags ๐Ÿ˜…

I personally think the only acceptable LV in the luggage department is a slightly beat up keepallโ€ฆ everything else :/

Joanna Kaze's avatar

the whole LV luggage dept got ruined for all of us and yes, only a select few styles managed to survive. But as usual, it really depends a lot on the wearer.

My mom LOVED LV and I donโ€™t get it. Consigned all of her pieces. The OG stuff (vintage) is very cool though- like the trunks!

Carson Griffith's avatar

Vintage trunks yes! When I visit my parents in SW FL where they retired or in Europe I see certain women with the vintage carryalls and itโ€™s a good look. But beyond that, nothing has pulled me inโ€ฆ.

My grandparents had a set of LV suitcases and related pieces from the 70s and we made a shocking amount of money when we sent them to auction. I guess the old stuff has value to collectors.

I think the old stuff is in a different stratosphere

One of my most viral stories for WSJ was the millionaires of Marshallโ€™s, about all the wealthy women who shop at TJโ€™s and Marshallโ€™sโ€ฆ do not judge!

Last year I found a gorgeous 100% cashmere sweater from The Row at TJ Maxxโ€”one of my best scores ever!

The Hori scramble is killing me. Only New York could turn 14 seats into a gladiator match

I wonder if they even realize how much regulars are getting offered for other to get in!

Not me trying to figure out the best tax plan for whoever purchases the Chagallsโ€ฆ

Carson Griffith's avatar

Why did I think about this so long? I feel like I need to interview an accountant for the uber wealthy

would kill to read this!

Rosie Buchanan's avatar

That would be so fun to read. I geek out about anything related to art and law (which often relates to taxes.)

Love this idea nowโ€ฆ getting so many good ideas from subscribersโ€ฆ

Love the Costco LV observation. The whole status anxiety around where somethign was purchased is interesting because it reflects how much luxury branding still depends on exclusivity theater. When accessibility breaks the illusion, the object itself becomes less valuable. Iv noticed this happen with specific bag models once they saturate too broadly.

One of the wealthiest women I have known in my life bought all her sheets from Marshallโ€™s. Consumerism and how each person approaches it is so interesting to meโ€ฆ
