I also wanted to share some of the reader reactions to RPS breaking the news last week that Scott's — the London seafood institution on Mount Street in Mayfair, a favorite of Ian Fleming — will be coming to New York as part of Annabel's members club. I reported on the dog nanny trend for The Times UK, with my story coming out yesterday (“A New Must-Have for the Super-Rich: A Live-In Dog Nanny”). The agency that inspired it — Household Staffing, out of Philadelphia — found its way into my social feed via a series of viral Instagram posts.

For today’s letter, I spoke with their Director of Operations, Olivia Fountain, who started as a nanny at 18, ran her own agency, and has worked every side of the industry. She told me that beginner nannies are now commanding rates that top nannies couldn't get a few years ago, that families are requesting D1 athletes to play tennis with their kids, and that the nanny poaching happening on the Upper East Side makes dog nanny poaching look like nothing. But what’s even better than having a secret is being allowed to share one. The first time I heard what restaurant was going into the new Annabel’s, I was sworn to secrecy. I was specifically told not to talk about it. So I kept my mouth shut, even when the restaurant kept coming up around me. And it happened a lot, because every well-traveled person I know seems to have a story about this place.

It wasn’t until this week, when a second person independently confirmed it to me, that I was finally given permission to talk about it publicly. Today’s letter is one of my favorites in a while — and after a week like this one, we all deserve it. I have never been to the Milken Conference, but when a friend with a very big job and a reason to be there offered to report back with their observations for RPS, I immediately said yes. My one request was to please, please make it legible to those of us who do not work in business and have never attended what is essentially Davos for people who don’t like snow. The last thing I wanted was a field report packed with policy jargon that I’d spend a day translating. It has been a long time since I got my business degree, and an even longer time since I worked anywhere near a balance sheet.

Luckily, our on-the-ground correspondent delivered a report that includes a little bit of everything: a party at a house Rihanna once owned, a Pitbull concert, Brunello Cucinelli pullovers, the temperature on China, Jensen Huang, private aviation gossip, Larry Fink, crypto slander, and somehow, a Taylor Swift mention. I am thoroughly impressed.

The flashpoints this year are hard to keep up with. People are particularly mad Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are the lead sponsors, reportedly paying at least $10 million to underwrite the evening, and for the first time in the gala’s history, it is an individual, not a fashion house, whose name is on the invitation. This year it’s a billionaire. (As Chrissy Rutherford pointed out online, why wasn’t everyone as mad with Amazon sponsoring the CFDA Awards the last four years?).

But you probably know all of this, as it has been rehashed endlessly for the past week, right? And it’s going to be even more so everywhere today (and tomorrow…and the next day…). So you don’t need me to tell you. A few things worth knowing anyway, since everyone loves trivia:

Wintour bans specific foods from the dinner — anything that could get stuck in teeth (parsley), anything messy (bruschetta), heavy garlic and onions for bad breath, or anything that could stain a dress. Maybe this is good protocol to apply to all dinner parties. Or at least ones I attend. I am, historically, a menace to my own outfit.

Another thing to consider about how the Met has grown: In 1948, when the Gala began, tickets were $50 — the inflation-adjusted equivalent of roughly $674 today. This year they are $100,000 each. (The equivalent of that in 1948? $1,376. I think our math is a little off here, folks).

As for today’s RPS, I do have a little exclusive Met Ball news for you (which has to do with the Mark Hotel’s security), but for those of you that are sick of hearing about it, don’t worry, there are plenty of other things for you too. I was chatting with her about my upcoming travel schedule recently when she mentioned that she had to make a last-minute trip to Europe in May (maybe Switzerland?) and that I should consider coming along. The reason, she explained, was that she needed to renew her dog’s European passport. I laughed, because a dog having any passport, let alone a European one, seemed genuinely absurd to me. But she was serious. Her longtime partner is British, they travel constantly, and the passport (her dog’s, to be clear) was not a bit. It was a real document, issued by a real European vet — and one that, as of April 22nd, is no longer valid for anyone who doesn't actually live in Europe.

A new ruling effectively closed the door on non-EU residents holding one, which means the pilgrimage back to a European vet to renew her dog’s rabies vaccination (the passport itself never expires, but the vaccination inside it does, every one to three years depending on the vaccine) is no longer the necessary errand it once was. The passport is now, technically, void.

So what does a dog who has logged more European air miles than most people do with that information? Well, nothing. Dogs don’t read legislation. (Duh!) But RPS does have some helpful information for what owners can do. Traveling to Europe frequently, or for any real stretch of time, has never been particularly simple for dog owners — but there are still routes through, for those unwilling to leave the furriest members of their household behind. Getting into the U.K. from the U.S., meanwhile, is its own category of logistical theater, which has been made even more complicated since Brexit.

I'm not going to say who I am, and if you understood how this works, you'd understand why. Hermès does not look kindly on the resale market. If they figure out who you are and what you're doing, they cut you off. They have blacklisted buyers for less. This whole industry runs on trust and relationships. I'm not a consignment business, so I own everything I sell outright and I move faster than anyone else. You would know my clients, but I don’t name names. But you would know a lot of them.”

“From 2000 to 2006, I just might have been the largest Hermès Birkin reseller in the world, averaging several million dollars per year in sales. I’ve visited 141 Hermès stores and have 274 stamps in my passport. In 2008, I wrote the bestselling memoir, Bringing Home the Birkin, which is now published in 13 languages.

I write about [the Hermes buying process] in the early chapters of my book. Prior to 2008 Hermès, and specifically the Birkin bag, was famous for its “Waiting List”. Hermès, at the time, claimed that they couldn’t produce enough Birkins to keep up with demand, so they created the waiting list. If you walked into a Hermès store and asked to buy a Birkin a sales associate would put you on the waiting list. Depending on the year, the waiting list could be anywhere from two to three years long. Purely by accident I discovered that the waiting list was a fraud (didn’t actually exist) and I wrote about that discovery in my book. When the book was published in May 2008, the media flooded Hermès with requests about the waiting list and for the first month or so Hermès declined to reply (’No comment”). Then Hermès released a statement, something along the lines of, ‘We encourage clients to establish a relationship with one of our sales associates who will help them acquire a bag.’ Well that opened its own can of worms... ‘What does establishing a relationship mean?’

Anyhow, that eventually evolved to the current situation which is quite convoluted. The general consensus today is that you simply need to spend (a lot of) money in the store on clothing, jewelry, footwear, etc and then eventually they will offer (reward you?) up the opportunity to purchase a Birkin. Typically that opportunity to purchase a Birkin will be a Birkin of their choosing…not of yours.”

That’s usually the gap. This is a short list of the places that close it. You can thank me later. But trust me. Even incorporating one thing from this list will astronomically improve your next trip to London, whether you’re looking for advice on how to get into a members club without actually being a member, the best aesthetic doctor on Harley Street, or an atelier by the granddaughter of the pattern cutter to Monsieur Christian Dior in the 1950s.

Some things on this list are the obvious ones—you’ve seen them everywhere for a reason. Some are the swaps. (We all love Gymkhana, but I can do you one better.) And it’s not an exhaustive list, either. If it was, it would be as big as London, and no one has time as that. Not you, not me.

And as always, I want your opinion. You’re here because you have one. Most of you send it to me directly (email or DM) but when something is worth sharing, it should be shared. Example: Last week I mentioned the line at Eagle Bar and a few of you immediately said it wasn’t worth it. That’s useful context for anyone deciding whether to go. Make some well-educated noise, in good taste.

Don’t be worried if the answer is no. It hasn’t even been open for two months yet. (Which means, of course, I had to go even though I only heard about it two weeks ago). Celeste is in the old Beach Blanket Babylon on Ledbury Road in Notting Hill, from the same group as Maison Estelle, so the membership overlaps. It’s the first proper members club in the area, which is definitely making some noise, as all the others are sort of grouped together.

As per promised once a month, RPS is back with The Billionaires Social Calendar. May’s edition includes the Met Gala, Milken, Frieze, Cannes, the Italian Open, the French Open, and a few other stops that tend to involve the same people, just in different places.

It’s not presented as a plan, and no one ever really says they’re doing all of it, but once you see it laid out like this, it’s hard to ignore how much overlap there is. I’m writing this to you from a plane on London back to New York. I had a better time than I probably should have. Per usual, I didn’t want to leave (do I ever?). This was the first time I didn’t extend my trip, although I’m already planning my next one. The reason I’m telling you this isn’t to bore you, but because I’ve been putting together what is, sincerely, one of the best London guides I think you’re going to read. It’s got everything: restaurants, shopping, insider knowledge and personal anecdotes. The UK is RPS’s second largest audience after the U.S., and some of my most active readers are there. You’re some of my most regular emailers, too. I met so many of you while I was in London. I think (fingers crossed) you’re really going to like it.

But I do need your help with one thing. It’s coming with a London Venn & Now. For new subscribers, if you don’t know what that is, check out a version here and here. I want as many opinions on this as possible. I need what represents old London, things that are no longer cool, have closed, or once defined a certain kind of cliché culture, what represents new London, and what belongs in the middle. A good example someone gave was Tramp. It used to be cool, then it wasn’t, and now it is again, so that goes in the middle. Today, please enjoy my first ever killed piece in my 17-year journalism career. I was commissioned for this piece about college admissions accounts (the non-sanctioned social media accounts that announce where high school students are going to college), because of my widespread knowledge of the private school ecosystem on the Upper East Side, but the editor felt it didn’t have enough tension after I turned it in. She wanted more “teenage and parental angst and emotion” (her quote, not mine). Unfortunately, I didn’t feel that existed, and I didn’t feel comfortable creating a false narrative. (If there’s one thing you can be sure, I will never make a story out of nothing. I took the kill fee). But I do think there is a fun story here even if it’s not some epic tale of upset. (Go easy on me, it has not had the artful touch of a pro editor and is a little formal and less fun than my normal RPS stories, which basically are just my day-to-day talking voice with you all). Also, I had a few of the kids on the record in the original draft, including the son of a RPS subscriber I have gotten to parasocially know, but I have made everyone anonymous in this version since they signed up to be in a traditional media story, not my newsletter. I try to be as transparent with everone as possible. Call me old-fashioned!

Hi from London. I’m a day late with this—I seem to be running out of hours—so you’ll have to forgive me. I’m also still trying to track down an Oswald’s connection, so if any of you are members, speak now.

If you read today’s headline and thought, “March?”—no, that wasn’t a typo. I’m about a week (or, fine, two) late on the monthly list of what everyone was talking about, which many of you have pointed out, so here it is: A Canonical List of Rich People Shit: March Edition.

Here’s what March kept shoving in your face: The Paramount situation is still unresolved, which at this point feels less like a deal and more like a group of very powerful people refusing to be the one who gives in first. In Miami, everyone got fixated on the Open’s $100 caviar hot dog. Not because it was shocking (there are $100 caviar-coated chicken nuggets at the U.S Open), but because it was something new for social media. TSA lines got bad enough that people started making a very straight-faced case for flying private. Amy Griffin’s The Tell is back in the conversation, and Oprah still hasn’t commented. Gwyneth as Belle Burden in Strangers made immediate sense. Admissions decisions came out and New York lost its mind for a few days. INTERVIEW’s “Meet the Finest Boys in Finance” made the rounds. You could tell who wasn’t thrilled (hint: their employers). Love Story went from obsession to backlash, all with one very cringey finale. And Pharrell’s auction house Joopiter sold a $5.55 million dinosaur skeleton, which tracks with the recent run on rich people buying dinosaurs.

Times have changed, and prices have climbed. Mr. Chow will no longer be serving its trademark chicken satay and lychee martinis from the corner of Hudson and North Moore soon. The space—Mr. Chow Tribeca—is now being marketed for annual lease, with materials circulating it as an “iconic prime corner.” The shift comes as Philippe Chow relocates from its longtime Upper East Side address to a new Fifth Avenue midtown location. I’m happy to tell you that that time has nearly come. RPS is officially in execution mode for both of these things, and they will go hand-in-hand.

I’ve been very lucky to have a lot of people willing to help me with this, people volunteering their skill sets to shape what will (hopefully) be a very fun event, and people with strong instincts on brand making sure the merch is actually merch-ing and we don’t end up with a pile of hats that look like they came from a Little League team. (And of course, if this is your realm, I am always taking more help—email me at carson@readrps.com if you want to get involved).

But I’ve been most lucky with the subscribers. First, there are so many of you (where did you all come from?!). Thousands and thousands, and we haven’t even hit the three month mark. By the time this event rolls around, RPS will be in the five digits for subscribers. And the mix is not normal—mega-financiers, ’90s Hollywood heartthrobs, content creators with millions of followers, and everything in between. I wish I really could get all of you in a room someday.

We’re still putting the details together (location, date, all of that) but here’s what I can tell you so far:

• To be invited, you must be a paid subscriber by May 1. Monthly, annual, it doesn’t matter. The event will take place in New York City in late May or June.

• The event is for paid subscribers, along with some familiar faces from the RPS orbit over the years.

• No plus-ones. If you want to bring a guest, have them become a paid subscriber—the cheapest ticket you’ll find.

• A private invitation will be sent to all paid subscribers within a few weeks.

• What if you’re a paid subscriber but not in New York? You’re out of luck—just kidding. But sort of, this time. We’re starting here and taking it slow, with plans (hopes?) to do others elsewhere. In the meantime, paid subscribers will get a deep discount on merch when it launches, with the understanding not everyone is in the tri-state area.

For those of you who don’t know me personally, I have thrown a few dinners and parties in my time. My favorite part is the element of surprise. Don’t tell guests exactly what they’re in for—don’t tell them what type of party you’re having, or what they’re walking into—and then overdeliver. Make the guest list better than they expected, make the space better than they expected, make the catering or decor better than they expected. Rely on the mystery leading up to the night so they’re slightly confused when they walk into the door but pleasantly confused when they leave out of it that same night. This is how I’ve pretty much done every dinner and cocktail party I’ve thrown my entire life. And this one, hopefully, won’t be any different, because not only is that the way I like to do things, but this also will be a “tester” event for all other future RPS events. Those who attend may have to roll with the punches. It may not be perfect but it will hopefully be memorable.

If you were on top of it, and in the market, you probably started looking for a Hamptons rental months ago. This year lagged. It was cold, there was snow on the ground, and a lot of places didn’t show well, so people waited. What is usually settled by now is still being figured out.

Which is how, in early April, some Hamptons realtors dealing in one of the wealthiest areas out East have found themselves talking about something they do not usually have to factor in. The geese. But not just any geese.

If not, consider this your prompt. But because I’m nice, here’s a quick summary: For one week a year, a few hundred seniors from New York’s most expensive private schools effectively turn Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas into a kind of pre-college finishing school, just with far more drinking and far less supervision. They arrive in tight school clusters—Horace Mann, Dalton, Trinity—and spend the week cycling between the resort’s pools, the casino floor, and late-night hotel room parties, with wristbands that give them near-total access to the property. The fact that this is essentially a college-style spring break—but for high school seniors—is the part I couldn’t quite grasp. So I went straight to the horse’s mouth to hear how this year’s trip played out.

Meet Rich People Shit’s anonymous Private School Kid—RPS’s PSK, or the PSK of RPS, whichever you prefer—who hadn’t even been home from the Bahamas for 24 hours before I had him on the phone walking me through the entire trip.

My favorite anthropological detail, though—and perhaps the most reminiscent of my own high school experience—was that a lot of the girls go on “P.I.ets” before the trip (“the Paradise Island diet”). You can dress up teenage disordered eating with a cute name, but some things don’t change.
